Review

The Gift of Southern Cooking is a treasure trove of authentic Southern home cooking and hospitality. Edna Lewis and Scott Peacock together have written a perfect collection of recipes and culinary traditions for home cooks interested in food (and a little bit of history) of the American South. Edna Lewis has spent much of her 80 years sharing her Virginia country cooking (author of classic cookbooks of the south, Taste of Country Cooking and In Pursuit of Flavor) and Scott Peacock is an accomplished chef (he served as chef to two governors of Georgia). The warmth and appreciation for Southern cooking these two cooks and friends share is evident on every page.

The authors are two extraordinary chefs who know not only how to cook, but also how to share their secrets to Southern hospitality. Their tone and delivery is pure Southern comfort…“It Doesn’t Have to be Fancy” introduces us to a fine collection of pies, cobblers, puddings, and “Praise the Lord and Pass the Biscuits” sets us up for recipes for yeast breads, cornbreads, biscuits and pancakes.

The recipes are authentic Southern fare with classic dishes such as Old-Fashioned Creamy Grits, Country Ham Steak with Red-Eye Gravy, Hot Crusty Buttermilk Biscuits, and Southern Greens Cooked in Pork Stock, and of course, Crab Cakes. This is simple food with big flavor.

The Gift of Southern Cooking has a true Southern spirit with authentic dishes that will provide countless hours of enjoyment in the kitchen and at the table. Sure to be a classic cookbook for its recipes alone, the stunning photographs and great design make it an absolute must-have book.
